(4 minutes read time)
As soon as the donation van drove away, I was overcome with the urge to run after it and beg for my stuff back!
What the actual hell have I done?
Not to be dramatic, but it felt like my entire world left in that van because, in a sense, it did.
The ENTIRE contents of my closet disappeared. Gone. Finito.
And that’s really when the panic set in: That was alllll my old clothes! What if I need them again? How could I part with them? What if I lose weight and wanna wear them again?
But you know what? That feeling lasted all of a minute.
Because as soon as the van was just speck on the horizon, I turned back to the closet where those old/worn out clothes lived for the past 5 years.
It was empty!
So, I did the only thing left to do: I slowly began putting the clothes that were my actual size into the closet. I even had room for my shoes and accessories now!
They no longer had to live on “The Chair.” (IYKYK, am I right?!)
When I was done, my closet looked like a boutique display.
I couldn’t stop looking at it.
It was GORGEOUS!!
All of that panic and worry and regret was replaced by relief and, dare I say, JOY!!!!
So, let me ask you, (first name): Are you afraid of decluttering regret? I was, too. I was so worried about it that I just didn’t declutter!
There is another way to do it, though. Let’s get into it next.
ADHD Decluttering Tip for Real Life – Time Will Tell Bin
In past newsletters, I’ve taught you to start decluttering with trash and easy donations so we can build up our decluttering muscles.
And last week, I taught you about the Memory Bin for the sentimental, absolute keepers.
But what about the other stuff?
You know the things that:
- Are not treasures
- Nor are they trash
- You’re not ready to donate just yet
- BUT they are NOT adding value to your life anymore AND are taking up valuable space
You know like your Harry Potter book collection or those old sets of D&D dice?
No? Is it just me that has those? (My nerd flag is flying high again!)
OK maybe something more relatable – your kids’ Disney princess DVD collection stacked up in the corner of the family room, but your kids are in high school now and you don’t even own a DVD player anymore?
Or the water goblets you just HAD to have on your wedding registry back in 2005, but you STILL haven’t used them?
OR if you’re like me…most of what’s in your closet
(But your Stanleys live on the counter because the damn goblets take up all the space in your cabinet…)
This is where a Time Will Tell Bin comes in.
You’re not ready to let it go.But you also don’t want it in your everyday space.
How to Use a Time Will Tell Bin
- Put the stuff you’re unsure of in the bin
- Label it
- Move it somewhere out of the way
- Set a date for the future (like 3-6 months or whatever feels right to you).
- Then you live without it for that period of time
If, during that time, you haven’t:
- Reached for it
- Missed it
- And/or remembered it even exists
Then that tells you something VERY important.
You now can donate or toss the entire bin with confidence, because you already proved to yourself you can live without it.
And best of all?
You didn’t end up crying on the floor regretting all your life decisions.
Remember: Progress. Not Perfection.
P.S. How are your kitchen counters really doing?
Do you order DoorDash more often than you want to admit because moving the stack of mail to chop veggies feels like too much after a long day at work? For the cost of one delivery meal for the fam you can add in some accountability and coaching with meeee this Spring!
